Northland couple laid to rest

The Far North couple who died after a shooting at their Fairburn home last Sunday have been laid to rest in separate urupa.

Carmen and Ivan Maheno had been lying together since Wednesday at Te Paatu Marae in Pamapuria, south of Kaitaia, where family members from around New Zealand and Australia paid their respects.

Marae chairman Ricky Houghton said family members had also spent the past few days discussing where the couple should be buried, eventually deciding against burying them together at Pamapuria.

Mr Maheno's service was held at 11am today at St Stephen's Church, Pamapuria, followed by interment at Tarakaka Urupa.

Mrs Maheno's service was held at Oturu Marae, northeast of Kaitaia, at 1pm today followed by burial at nearby Hikinui Urupa.

The couple have two children, aged 8 and 17, who were not home at the time of the shooting.

The couple's nephew, Edwin Maheno, has been charged with two counts of murder and has been in custody since handing himself in at the Kaitaia police station on Sunday.
