A 38-year-old man will be appearing in the Kaitaia District Court tomorrow charged with murder.
Police launched a homicide investigation after a serious incident involving a firearm today at a Fairburn Road address near Kaitaia.
A 44-year-old man died in the incident and a 38-year-old woman and mother of two was critically injured.
No other people were present at the address at the time of the incident and Police are not looking for anyone else in relation to the incident.
The woman remains in a critical condition in Whangarei Hospital.
Police are carrying out a scene examination tomorrow.
They are asking anyone with information on events in or around 24a Fairburn Road to contact the Kaitaia Police on 09 408 6500.

One male has been found at an address dead, and a female was found close by seriously injured. The female victim has been transported to Whangarei Hospital in a critical condition.
A 38-year-old male has turned himself in at the Kaitaia Police Station, and is helping police.
A team of 22 staff from the wider Northland area are currently involved in this investigation.
