A new mural has taken shape in the centre of Otangarei, with a world champion graffiti artist on hand to produce the work.
Bethel Church worked in association with the Otangarei Trust and put on a community day, with food, music and four graffiti artists working yesterday.
Bethel Church Piggott senior leader Andy Piggott said he had been working alongside the Otangarei Trust to come up with a concept that could communicate something from the heart of Otangarei.
"The kaumatua had been telling me how Otangarei had once been a fertile garden for the local hapu.
"We know that Otangarei is all about the community," he said.
Charles Williams has won two titles at the graffiti art world championships with the graffiti crew "TMD" and was on hand yesterday to add his expert touches.
Mr Williams is based in Auckland but wanted to be part of the Otangarei mural after hearing about it through friends, so decided to come up and participate.
He said the mural would be all about colour, with 10 pastel colours being incorporated in a mixture of words, symbols and plenty of flowers.
"We just want to release something positive," he said.
Members of the community turned up to enjoy the atmosphere, tuck into a hamburger or a sausage sizzle, and watch the mural take shape.
"I hope it shares the love and the message," Mr Williams said.
