Museum charity role a hit

By Lindy Laird

The news just gets better and better about the staging of charity fundraiser fashion shows at Whangarei Art Museum.

Museum director Scott Pothan has handed over a total of $4309 to the two Whangarei women's refuge centres, Tryphina House and Te Puna O Te Aroha Maori.

Last Wednesday, only minutes after presenting representatives from both centres with their cheques for $2154.50 raised from last month's Soo Tru ... Sew True: The Runway Show, Mr Pothan received a call notifying him the museum is a finalist in this year's Museums Aotearoa Awards because of the success of that fashion show and last year's Project Promise Project Runway show.

Both shows have been hosted at the museum and accompanied similarly themed art exhibitions.

Mr Pothan said he hoped the fashion shows would become part of the Whangarei fundraising calendar.

"I'm absolutely thrilled for WAM to be judged a finalist again in the national museums awards for the third year running. This one is special though, as it is a unique initiative for an art museum and a highly deserving cause in our community," he said.
