Fatal crash blocks SH1 near Whangarei

By Kristin Edge

11.15am UPDATE: Police are appealing for information about a truck trailer parked overnight at Whangarei's visitor information centre just south of the city.

The body of a man was discovered outside the centre about 5.45am today.

Whangarei police Senior Constable Paul Nicohlas said it appeared a man had fallen asleep beneath a trailer unit parked at the centre. It's thought the truck driver returned early today and hooked up to the trailer and drove off unaware of the person sleeping beneath the trailer.

Mr Nicholas said police wanted to speak to the driver or anyone who may know who the driver was, or information about drivers who parked at the centre regularly.

He said the deceased man was yet to be formally identified.

Anyone with information can ring Whangarei police station on 09 4304500 and ask for Constable Gordon Romley.
