Northland teachers picket over Novopay

Teachers were picketing Phil Heatley's office in Whangarei this morning ahead of meetings around the Novopay debacle.

Today marks six months since the disastrous system was introduced, with teachers around the country constantly having problems with their pay.

New Zealand Education Institute field Northland officer Bessie Mutu attended the march along with more than 20 others.

"We have had enough of Novopay. We want to send a message to Mr Joyce [Novopay Minister Steven Joyce] that enough is enough," she said.

Jo Collyer, Primary Teachers Teadership Team for Tai Tokerau, knocked on Mr Heatley's door and delivered a letter signed by primary and intermediate teachers.

Teachers met on the corner of Mill Road and Kamo Road and marched to Phil Heatley's electorate office on Deveron St. The picket comes before meetings being held across Northland from March 12-22.

Thousands of Northland primary teachers will be meeting to discuss important issues in public education, including progress on their collective agreement negotiations and their response to the Novopay debacle.

Teachers will be looking at the claims put up by the Ministry of Education which NZEI believes threatens New Zealand's quality public education system.

The ministry's claims would advance the Global Education Reform agenda which invites competition rather than collaboration, more inequity in schools and communities, and leads to standardisation in learning rather than meeting an individual's needs, said NZEI.

NZEI meetings in Northland:

Dargaville Primary, 2pm, March 13.

Kaikohe East School, 2pm, March 14.

Wellsford School, 2pm, March 14.

Kamo Intermediate, 2pm, March 15.

Waimauku School, 2pm, March 18.

Kaitaia Intermediate, 2pm, March 19.

Manaia View School, 2pm, March 20.
