Police seek witnesses to serious bike crash

By Kristin Edge

A Whangarei woman riding her bike to work suffered serious injuries after a collision with a vehicle on a day encouraging people to cycle.

Police are now appealing for witnesses to the collision which happened at the intersection of Walton and Albert Sts in central Whangarei about 8am on Wednesday.

A 50-year-old woman remained in hospital yesterday with serious pelvis and spinal fractures after being hit by a car as she cycled south on Walton St.

A car turning right into Albert St collided with the front wheel of the bike causing the woman to fall off, smashing the car windscreen before tumbling on to the road.

Police Sergeant Chris Goodall said the driver stopped and helped the woman until emergency services arrived.

The cyclist was wearing a high visibility vest and a helmet and reportedly cycled to work regularly.

Mr Goodall said he would like to speak with anyone who may have seen crash or the woman or vehicle prior to the collision.

If you can help, contact Mr Goodall at Whangarei Police Station on 09-4304500
