Street cordon in Whangarei after attack

Police closed off streets in a Whangarei suburb in a bid to catch a man who had allegedly assaulted a police officer, who was interviewing a woman the man had allegedly assaulted earlier.

Acting Sergeant Storm Sandilands said police were called to an Otangarei house about 1pm on Tuesday after a woman was assaulted. A man had fled the house and then returned.

While the officer tried to arrest the man he allegedly assaulted the officer and again fled. Streets were cordoned and a police dog and handler called to the scene. Police tracked the man down about 1.30am yesterday and charged him with male assaults female, burglary, aggravated assault, escaping custody, wilful damage.
