Kaikohe delivered mixed bag of weather

By Mike Dinsdale

December delivered a mixed bag of weather across the country, with Kaikohe having a more variable month than most.

Climate scientist Andrew Tait said Niwa's climate summary for December showed a month with some extremes across the country, but Kaikohe stood out, with record temperatures and rainfall.

Kaikohe recorded 217mm of rain for December - it's fourth highest total for the month ever and almost double the monthly average - thanks mainly to a record 106mm on Christmas Eve.

Dr Tait said this was due to the remnants of ex-tropical cyclone Evan, which hit Northland on December 24.

"Northland was the only place that got any really heavy rain from cyclone Evan, which brought a lot of moisture from the tropics, but then swept out across the Tasman after leaving some rain."

But Kaikohe also recorded its highest official December temperature of 28.1C on December 19.
