Driver lucky to avoid electrocution

The driver and sole occupant of a car that crashed into a power pole on SH1 just south of Waiharara yesterday morning was lucky to escape without serious injury, or electrocution, a Kaitaia Fire Brigade spokesman said.

The car, which left the road on a sweeping left-hand bend as the driver headed south, came to rest on its roof, with live power lines draped over it, about 28km northwest of Kaitaia, about 8.20am.

The spokesman said the nearby fence was well and truly "alive," and that the car probably was, too.

However, it had been sufficiently earthed to allow the woman to get out before emergency services and Top Energy staff arrived.

She was treated at the scene by a St John crew but was not believed to have suffered significant injury.

Police inquiries into the accident were continuing.
