Hurt driver fights for life in hospital

A Far North man badly injured in a crash on Moerewa's Turntable Hill was yesterday still in a critical condition in the intensive care unit of Auckland City Hospital.

The 41-year-old was the driver of a Nissan Terrano which rolled as it was heading south on State Highway One about 1.30am on Sunday, throwing him and his passenger from the vehicle.

Sergeant Phil Le Comte, of Kerikeri police, said the driver was initially taken to Bay of Islands Hospital in Kawakawa but was transferred to Whangarei and from there to Auckland when his condition deteriorated.

The police Serious Crash Unit was called out but diverted to a fatal crash south of Dargaville about the same time, returning to Turntable Hill later on Sunday for a detailed scene investigation.

The male passenger appeared to have escaped serious injury.

The Kawakawa Fire Brigade also attended the crash.
