Scholarship exam? No sweat

By Abi Thomas

The numbers are adding up for Jonathon Luiten and William Muller, of Whangarei Boys' High School, who are among the first students in the country to sit external exams this year.

And there are a lot of numbers when you're sitting at least 10 exams over the next few weeks.

Jonathon, 18, and William, 17, are the only Boys' High students sitting New Zealand Scholarship statistics tomorrow, the second exam of 120 to be sat by students around New Zealand.

Scholarship exams are an extension on NCEA Level 3 sat by most Year 13 students. They're an extra challenge for high-achieving students who are looking for "bursaries" or scholarship money to assist with university fees.

The first exam today will be Scholarship drama, followed tomorrow by Scholarship statistics and Scholarship biology. The exam with the biggest number of participants - more than 46,000 nationwide - is Level 1 English on Monday.

William is heading to Otago University next year to do first-year health science with a view to studying medicine, while Jonathon will do engineering at Auckland University.

They sat Cambridge A Levels in maths a few weeks ago, but have at least 10 exams to go before they can say goodbye to high school.

William is sitting Level 3 exams in statistics, calculus, biology, chemistry, physics and Latin, and Scholarship exams in all except Latin, while Jonathon is sitting Level 3 and Scholarship exams in statistics, calculus, biology, chemistry and physics.

The boys aren't nervous about their Scholarship statistics tomorrow, with Jonathon so bold as to say "I'm good, I'll ace it". Chances are, he's right - he was named school dux this week, with William proxime accessit (runner-up dux).
