Around 200 people attended a community open day at Mangawhai to view concept plans for the development of Mangawhai Park.
Mangawhai Park is a large area of relatively undeveloped land off Molesworth Drive. Plans for the 37ha complex include walking tracks, cycleways, a playground, recreation area and a museum.
A steering group to determine an overall vision for the area includes representatives from the Mangawhai Track Trust, St John Ambulance, Mangawhai Historical Museum, Mangawhai Club and the golf club, Kaipara District Council and Mangawhai Activity Zone.
Concept displays were set up at the Mangawhai Club last weekend.
Jim Wintle, chairman of the steering group, described the day as "very, very successful".
"People came to look and to ask questions," Mr Wintle said. "The park is a very important part of Mangawhai and it was very heartening to see the amount of interest. It is tremendous to see the community doing it for themselves. The challenge, of course, will be keeping up the momentum."
The community will have further input at the next open day at the Mangawhai Club on Saturday, November 10.
