Charges laid over roadside bashing

By Peter de Graaf

A Far North man is facing a serious assault charge following an attack in which a man was allegedly dragged from a car and beaten at Totara North.

Kerikeri police said the incident occurred about 7.10pm on Saturday after two men had been to the settlement's Gum Store bar for food.

As they were driving back to their address a man who had been following them cut in front of their vehicle, forcing them to stop. He punched the passenger three or four times in the head before dragging him out of the vehicle and punching and kicking him on the ground.

The victim, aged in his 50s, suffered facial injuries and was taken to Kaitaia Hospital for X-rays.

The alleged offender was located in Kaitaia and charged with injuring with intent.
