Water supply shut off
Kawakawa water supply will shut down for eight hours from tonight. A maintenance shutdown will leave households that are connected to the Kawakawa water treatment plant without water for eight hours from 9pm until 5am tomorrow. The Far North District Council apologises to Kawakawa and Moerewa residents for the inconvenience and advises them to store water for drinking and sanitary purposes before the shutdown. The maintenance is to replace a flow meter in a water main between the plant and the reticulation network.
Boy removed after row
A 13-year-old Whangarei boy had to be removed from his home by police after a dispute with his mother ended with him allegedly smashing the house up. Police were called to the Otangarei home about 7pm on Sunday. The boy was taken to a relative's home by police to give him a chance to calm down.
Suspicious door knocker
Police were called to Kerikeri Access Rd after reports of a suspicious character door knocking and claiming to be looking for work on Sunday. Sergeant Ross Laurie said the man may have been genuine, but was known to police and similar door-knocks sometimes preceded burglaries. He urged people to stay vigilant and keep an eye on neighbours' properties.
Stolen boat found
A near-new aluminium fishing boat and trailer, earlier reported stolen in the Whangaroa area, has been found in bush on a rural property near Kaeo with the outboard motor missing. The owner had already claimed insurance so the boat now belongs to the insurance company. The find came after a tip from a member of the public.
Vandals hit shops
Kerikeri police are calling for information about a vandalism spree, in which five large shop windows were damaged. A hard object was used to scratch a tag into windows at United Video, Kerikeri Community Gym, Kerikeri Bakehouse, Mondo Travel and Loft Design Store, all in the Homestead Rd/Fairway Drive areas. Sergeant Ross Laurie said each window cost up to $1000 to replace, a large sum for businesses affected by the economic downturn. He urged anyone with information about the offenders to call the Kerikeri station on (09) 407 9211.
