Driving to get his family a feed has landed a Far North man with home detention for his fourth drink driving conviction.
John Robert David LOFT, 42, appeared in Kaitaia District Court for sentencing on a charge of driving with excess breath alcohol for a third or subsequent time after he was stopped in Kaitaia on November 8.
Members of the public had reported Loft swerving his Holden across the centre line on Redan Rd and police stopped him on Commerce St. A breath test showed he had 987 micrograms of alcohol per litre of breath, more than twice the 400mcg limit.
When spoken to by police, Loft said he had driven from Broadwood, 48km away, to get a feed for his family. He was sentenced to 10 months' home detention and disqualified from driving for 24 months for his fourth drink-driving conviction.
Northland has some of the highest rates of drink driving in the country, particularly repeat offenders, and the Northern Advocate is publishing a "name and shame" list of all people convicted of drink-driving offences in the region.
Also sentenced in Northland's courts recently were:
Ngatote Salty NATHAN, 72, 688mcg, four months' community detention, nine months' supervision, disqualified from driving for 12 months and one day for third drink-driving conviction.
