Headbutt after arrest: police
A Whangarei man who did burnouts on a Tikipunga street while almost three times over the legal alcohol limit, allegedly headbutted a policeman on his way back to the station. Whangarei police Sergeant Graham Povey said police were called to reports of a car doing burnouts on Vinegar Hill Rd and Balmoral Rd about 9.45am yesterday. When officers arrived a man was seen walking away from the car and admitted being the driver, Mr Povey said. A breath test showed the man had a level of 1117 micrograms of alcohol per litre of breath, almost three times the 400mcg limit. The man was arrested, handcuffed and placed in the back of a police car and taken to Whangarei police station for processing. allegedly headbutted an officer who sat with him. A 52-year-old has been charged with assaulting police, driving with excess breath alcohol, driving with sustained loss of traction and driving while disqualified.
Arrest for assault
A Whangarei man has finally been arrested for allegedly assaulting a man who intervened in an argument. Sergeant Graham Povey, of Whangarei police, said a 20-year-old arrested on Sunday would appear in court charged with injuring with intent to injure after he allegedly bashed another man with a skateboard on October 16. Mr Povey said the arrested man was having an argument with his girlfriend when another man intervened to break it up. As the other man turned away, he was hit from behind and suffered a fractured cheekbone.
Food thieves nabbed
A man and girl who broke into the Kamo High School tuck shop didn't get too far - they were caught carrying boxes of food just a few hundred metres away. The man, aged 17, smashed a window using his skateboard while the 15-year-old girl kept watch, about 7.30pm on Sunday, police said. The pair then took off carrying boxes of snacks, but were caught in nearby Wakelin St, just a few hundred metres from the school.The man was charged with burglary while the girl was referred to the police youth aid section.
Crash victim named
The elderly Whangarei woman who died at the weekend after being involved in a car crash in Wellsford in September was Dorothy Watts. Mrs Watts, aged 83, was a passenger in a car involved in an accident that also killed the car's driver on September 21.
Drink-drive charge
A Whangarei woman is facing a drink driving charge after being caught on Saturday. Police said the woman, aged 18, was stopped in Morningside Rd at 3am on Saturday and given a breath test. She allegedly had a reading of 325 micrograms of alcohol per litre of breath. A zero alcohol limit applies to motorists aged under 20.
