The River City may soon have a new marketing slogan: "Come to Whanganui and sleep in the back of your car" — and it has nothing to do with homelessness.
Mayor Hamish McDouall made an appearance on TVOne's Seven Sharp show this week extolling the virtues of the city for freedom campers — especially in the wake of other centres such as Queenstown banning them.
Speaking from the back of his own car, Mr McDouall said freedom campers were welcome, though he admitted more toilet facilities were needed to accommodate them.
And he fondly recalled travelling across the United States in the 1990s in his car, freedom camper-style.
