Public submissions open on child car seat proposal

The public is being invited to have its say on a proposal to increase the age at which children have to use a car seat from five, to six.

The Transport Agency says it would keep the requirement for children aged seven to use a child restraint - if one is available.

However it would be mandatory for newborns up to six-year-olds.

At the moment only youngsters aged up to five must use a seat.

The NZTA says it's about reducing deaths and serious injuries that could have been prevented.

It says children are smaller and have a different body shape from adults, so they need car seats to keep them as safe.

It is taking submissions on its website.
