The German tourist who suffered life-threatening injuries to his head and face when his motorcycle collided with a four-wheel-drive north of Wanganui yesterday afternoon died in Wanganui Hospital overnight.

The man in his 50s was at the front of a group of 19 German motorcyclists who were touring the North Island. They were travelling to Taupo when the accident occurred on State Highway 4 near Aberfeldy.

Wanganui road policing Sergeant Colin Wright said the man appeared to have driven on to the right-hand side of the road when he saw the vehicle as it came around the corner. Germans drive on the right-hand side of the road.

The matter has now been referred to the Coroner.
