Police have named the man killed in a crash near Gisborne.

Patrick Raukawa, 59, of Gisborne, died when his four-wheel-drive left State Highway 2 south of Gisborne some time on Thursday night, and plunged 60 metres down a bank.

The vehicle went through dense vegetation before coming to rest slightly on its roof.
