What is your Oscar pick for 2013?

9:29 AM Friday Jan 11, 2013

Steven Spielberg has matched his personal best at the Academy Awards: 12 nominations for his Civil War saga Lincoln, including best picture, director and acting honours for Daniel Day-Lewis, Sally Field and Tommy Lee Jones.

Also among the nine nominees for best picture were the old-age love story Amour; the Iran hostage thriller Argo; the independent hit Beasts of the Southern Wild; the slave-revenge narrative Django Unchained; the musical Les Miserables; the shipwreck story Life of Pi; the lost-souls romance Silver Linings Playbook; and the Osama bin Laden manhunt chronicle Zero Dark Thirty.

Life of Pi surprisingly ran second with 11 nominations, ahead of Zero Dark Thirty and Les Miserables, which had been considered potential front-runners.

However, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey could only muster three nominations for production design, achievement in makeup and hairstyling and achievement in visual effects.

I'm guessing Lincoln will win a whole bunch - because Lincoln and Spielberg are both American heroes and patriotism wins every time. I mean, even though Lincoln was a Republican - it's still cool to like him because he 'freed the slaves' right?

Anyway, I haven't seen it and I won't because it doesn't appeal.

For a more fun take on 'freeing the slaves' - give the best picture Oscar to Tarantino for Django Unchained - seems like a film much more to my tastes. Action - not talk (even though talk is probably what QT does best).

Other picks - um, Armour willl win best foreign film (a dead cert - take that one to the bank), Daniel and Tommy will win actor statues for Lincoln, Jennifer and Anne for the actress prizes.

But I would love (LOVE) to see Joaquin Phoenix win for best actor - just to see his speech - given that publicallly ridiculed the whole 'Oscar' gig.

The only film in Best Picture category that I have seen is Beasts of the Southern Wild, which opened the NZ International Film Festival in Auckland last year.

It is a beautiful, haunting story and a deserved nominee.

I think "Lincoln" will win it. That seems to be what everything points towards. I don't necessarily think it is the best choice; however, these things seem to be decided long before they are ever announced.

I prefer the screen actor's guild awards as they are voted on by the actors themselves as well as people in the business behind the cameras. I think your peers are a better judge of outstanding work than are money men and folks that rate financial successes over craft successes.
