A man has been airlifted to hospital after being injured by a stingray.

The Westpac Rescue Helicopter was called out to Riversdale in the Wairarapa just after 3pm.

It's understood the man aged in his 50's sustained the wound while retrieving a crayfish pot.

The man struggled back to the beach, where he received basic first aid from the local Surf Life Saving members.

He's now recovering in the Masterton Hospital.
