Joel Parkinson has won the world surfing title.

11-time champion Kelly Slater has been beaten in the semi-finals of the Pipeline Masters in Hawaii, meaning Parkinson takes the title having advanced to the final.

"I've had some ups and downs and I've had some injuries. I've been through hell and back and this just makes it so much sweeter to stand here today."

It's the first time the Australian has won the world title, having been runner-up three times.
