Auckland Council is officially partnering with the Department of Conservation for the good of the city's environment.

The two organisations have signed an historic memorandum of understanding.

DOC Director-General Al Morrison thinks the strategic partnership is a milestone for the department, saying too many people think conservation is a back-country activity.

He says Auckland needs a healthy environment, because a healthy harbour and vibrant open spaces deliver direct returns through things like recreation and tourism.
