The much-anticipated plan for the rebuild of the Christchurch CBD has been released.

It includes 12 key sites for major facilities, including a new 2000-capacity convention centre at a "postcard location" by the Avon River, a huge aquatic and indoor sports facility, revitalised square with a new central library, and Ngai Tahu cultural centre.

Shops, restaurants, bars and cafes are expected to line the picturesque river's edge, as well as the sports stadiums, in a push to make the revitalised city "very much like Melbourne", according to Prime Minister John Key.

The blueprint will result in a low-rise city, with a maximum height limit on new buildings of 28m, or up to eight storeys, and will be divided into precincts of health, arts and entertainment, retail, as well as the justice and emergency sectors.

If you put in a decent tram network, also like Melbourne, I'll move there in a flash. It has the potential to be an awesome city, provided it is future proofed. I hope that the old conservative boring Christchurch of old can transform into a young, internationally focussed city.

Classic case of Nero fiddling while Rome burns. Where will the rebuilders live when there is not even enough accomocdation for the current citizens.

Why does it need a tram? The place is tiny. The Melbourne CBD, the only part with a tram, is enormous compared to the Christchurch CBD. It's pretty large compared to Christchurch! Looks like a good plan to me, but I do feel for those business owners and land owners whose land is now a park (good for those of us who only go there as tourists though)
