One person is in a critical condition after a car collided with another driving the wrong way along an Auckland motorway.

Emergency services were called to the Hobson Street on-ramp to the Northwestern and Southern motorways about 5.30am.

A police spokesperson said a car driving the wrong way down the westbound lane of the motorway collided head-on with another vehicle.

She said four people were injured in the collision, with one occupant critical and another two in a serious condition.

The road has now been cleared.

The Serious Crash Unit will investigate the accident.

Meanwhile State Highway 29 on the Lower Kaimai Ranges is closed after a truck turned over, spilling pallets on the road.

Emergency vehicles remain at the scene and contractors are on the way to clear the road.
