Two French backpackers have been accused of stealing books from a quake-hit Christchurch library.

Guillaume Pringault, 21, and Ilane Benazra, 22, are charged with stealing seven library books worth $200, the property of the Christchurch City Council.

They appeared at Christchurch District Court this morning, but their case was adjourned after lawyers dealing with the case struck "language difficulties."

The French pair were remanded on bail without plea until June 5, and police seized their passports.
