Sir Ian McKellen, who played Gandalf in the hugely successful Lord of the Rings movies, will perform at Hawkes Bay Opera House in Hastings.
On June 16 the British actor and theatre buff will treat people to an evening of entertainment to raise money for the Isaac Theatre Royal in Christchurch.
"We are really pleased to secure a date with him," Hawkes Bay Opera House events and programming manager Megan Peacock-Coyle said.
"The venues [which he will perform at] are not charging any extra venue hire and all box office funds will go straight to Christchurch."
During the first half of the show, Sir Ian will talk about his role in Lord of the Rings, read excerpts from Tolkien's books and answer questions from the audience.
In the second half he will discuss his roles in Shakespearean plays, read excerpts and finish with another question and answer session.
It was important for people to get behind the cause, Mrs Peacock-Coyle said.
"Unfortunately the arts do not get a lot of funding from the Government so this is really important."
Tickets go on sale for $50 on Friday, April 13 through Ticketek.
"If you want to see him, I would get in quick because it will be a sellout," she said.
