For 18 years The Big Day Out has been Auckland's biggest, noisiest music festival and a rite of passage for many teenagers - but after Friday, it will be no more.

Organisers have confirmed they are pulling the plug on the transtasman music festival's New Zealand show, although Australian concerts will continue.

Organiser Ken West said it was no longer financially viable to present the show in Auckland.

Simply because I never got to go. I always missed out when the good ones were on, missing out on Tool is a big regret for me. Soundgarden this year will be mint but from the sounds of it, hiking the prices up each year and not bringing in the really big acts would have killed it. Especially with Kanye pulling out this year. Oh well, I'm sure it won't be the end of really good acts conming to NZ. A lot of them like coming here

It's sad as far as missing out on big international acts visiting NZ but I certainly won't miss the horrible venue with it's draconian rules. It's never been very 'user friendly' festival, I can't even take my kids.

Sad that rising costs have put pay to what was the must do in January for music lovers of all genres. I'm sure there aren't many people who won't have a tale to tell about a BDO they attended.

Let's hope this is just a break as oppose to the final encore.
