Transport Agency consultants believe tolls of $6 to $8 could pay for a new Auckland harbour crossing.

The tolls would be charged on the new crossing and the existing harbour bridge.

The figures are in a report which the Auckland Council has circulated to local boards on options for building and paying for a $5.1 billion pair of motorway tunnels, or a new bridge for up to $3.9 billion.

Would you support a $6 Auckland Harbour crossing toll?

I can understand the need for a fair toll. $2? Maybe $3 at an absolute push? But $6 is an absolute joke.

I absolutely would. But saying that I also think that at the same time you need to give the commuters an alternative. A free cycle lane leading over the existing bridge and the new crossing needs to offer a competitive train option too. If you make the users pay, give them options to choose from at least.

$6 is probably too much and its an inconvenient amount. $5 is easier but it would probably put a lot of people off travelling over to the North Shore and back if they had to pay a $10 or $12 round trip to visit friends, pick up Trade Me purchases, Takapuna Markets etc A toll is needed but could be raised over several different methods - partially paid by Govt if it is a National Motorway and partially paid by each car using it.
