A mother spoke last night of her shock at the fad of planking after her teenage son was photographed lying over train tracks.

A photograph of Tauranga Boys College student Reid Moodie, 15, was posted on Facebook after he posed for the stunt last Friday.

Planking involves being photographed lying flat on a novel and precarious object, with the photos published online.

The internet craze shows no signs of abating despite safety warnings and the death last week of a Brisbane man who fell from a seventh-floor balcony railing of an apartment building.

Dangerously stupid. Honestly, does anybody actually find this ridiculous fad entertaining? Oh well, leave them at it and let natural selection continue to work it's magic.

The guy pictured planking in the supermarket is odd and may gain a few chuckles, but the kid planking on the rail track in a bid to out do other plankers is plain silly, he should be grounded for a month with no pocket money.

People call it harmless fun, and in the main it is. However what really intrigues me is the way so many have been influenced so easily/quickly by social media, and their willingness to be seen on such sites. Now that is the scary part.

I have seen the pictures and my kids have demonstrated the technique. However I can not see the point, unless it is to get a picture of yourself on one of the various social sites then have many moronic (and there are many) comments tagged to your photo. Are our kids really that unimaginative and needy.
