Larry Ellison's space-age trimaran BMW Oracle won back the America's Cup for the United States by speeding across the Mediterranean to rout two-time defending champion Alinghi of Switzerland for a two-race sweep.

The 65-year-old software tycoon was onboard his incredibly speedy craft this morning (NZT), after sitting out Race 1 due to a weight limit.

Ellison's victory over rival billionaire Ernesto Bertarelli sends the oldest trophy in international sports to San Francisco's Golden Gate Yacht Club.

Don't you mean. Who's Lawyer will win? The rich boys club have turned the world's best sailing event into an absolute joke, the outcome of which is now settled in courtrooms instead of on the water.

Rubbish Yeah Yeah, this is the most exciting and challenging A/C race in ages. This is what the A/C is all about, massive innovative ideas and extraordinarily radical boats pushing the boundaries.

Look back to the original series off England and Newport and the massive and radical boats involved in that era.

The A/C is not about fair and even match racing, that's for the Volvo/Citizen et al. The A/C is radical and that's as it should be. One of the boats has got it incredibly right and the other is a massive folly and will come dramatically unstuck . It will be fun to watch and ups the game to a whole new level with massive spin offs to technology and sailing.

The background lawyers and personalities drama is just the usual noise to up the media hype for the event.
