The overwhelming majority of distinguished New Zealanders who had the option of becoming knights or dames have indicated they want to use the titles.

The creation of knights and dames was scrapped by Helen Clark's Government in 2000 but was restored by the Prime Minister in March.

Those made principal companions or distinguished companions of the New Zealand Order of Merit in the intervening years were eligible to take advantage of John Key's retrospective move.

"Another person who will be offered the title of Dame is former attorney-general and speaker Margaret Wilson, who helped scrap the titles."

Would be interesting to see if she would accept a title.

Also, a GG just does not seem right without a title.

It's agreat idea. Unlike the liberal Labour ideas, National's resurection of the dames and knighthoods restores what little pride we should have in our people. Titles are given out to kiwis for doing good and great things. Most importanly, it encourages good intentions and caring atttitudes in our society. Well Done National! Just another little step in the right direction to restoring New Zealand!
