The Titans' five-game winning streak was brought to a dramatic halt last night by a Newcastle side finding their feet under the wily Brian Smith.
Admittedly the Gold Coasters have a dreadful record on the road (three from 14 before last night) but they are a more formidable opponent in their second season and came within a cat's whisker of improving that record.
But Newcastle, too, are an improved outfit and Smith's project with the two-time premiership winners is starting to take shape.
His side took a deserved 12-0 lead to the break after tries to Wes Naiqama and Jarrod Mullen in what was arguably their best half of the year. But they came under immense pressure in the second spell and it was a Mullens field goal 11 minutes from time that proved the difference.
Mullen's return after a three-week injury break was timely, especially as skipper and hooker Danny Buderus was absent after failing to back up from Friday night's City-Country Origin match.
He immediately stamped his quality on the match and reminded NSW Origin selectors of his credentials, putting the bomb up for Naiqama's try in the 20th minute and then jinking past four Titans defenders to score a fantastic solo try just before the break.
The Knights played a high-tempo game on attack and defence and they made some big metre gains over the table-toppers in the opening spell to put the visitors on the back foot.
It was a reversal of fortunes in the second spell as Newcastle were put under sustained pressure, but their line held firm until the 62nd minute when Scott Prince was awarded a try.
The video referee couldn't decide if Prince had grounded the ball on the line but referee Gavin Badger had no doubt even though there was plenty.
Momentum was with the Titans but Mullen landed a field goal in the 69th minute to give his side some breathing space. They needed it as Mark Minichiello, backing up from the Origin game, bustled over three minutes later to cut the gap to 13-12.
The margin ensured a frantic end to the match but the Knights held on for their fourth win of what could be a much better season than 12 months previously.
Knights 13 (W. Naiqama, J. Mullen tries, K. Gidley 2 gls, Mullen fg) Titans 12 (S.Prince, M. Minichiello tries, Prince 2 gls). HT: 12-0.
