Foreign language Oscar nominees announced

Oscars organisers have announced a nine-film shortlist in the Best Foreign Language Film category for next month's 79th edition of the Academy Awards.

The shortlist will be reduced to five nominees on January 23.

Days of Glory, directed by Rachid Bouchareb, Algeria

Water, directed by Deepa Mehta, Canada

After the Wedding, directed by Susanne Beir, Denmark

Avenue Montaigne, directed by Daniele Thompson, France

The Lives of Others, directed by Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck, Germany

Pan's Labyrinth, directed by Guillermo del Toro, Mexico

Black Book, directed by Paul Verhoeven, the Netherlands

Volver, directed by Pedro Almodovar, Spain

Vitus, directed by Fredi M. Murer, Switzerland
