The family of Masterton woman Maureen Hammond say police have told them her death was not the result of foul play.
The family issued a statement yesterday, saying they had recently met inquiry head Detective Inspector Stu Wildon and were told "that the police have found no foul play and that there is no basis for any charges to be laid."
Mrs Hammond, aged 50, was found dead in the bath at her Masterton home in late September by her husband, Wairarapa National electorate chairman Peter Hammond, who said he woke to find she was not in bed.
Police would not comment until they had read the Hammond family statement, Mr Wildon said.
The family said: "The whole thing has been a dreadful ordeal for Peter Hammond and his family. We have endured ... a very public police investigation.
"There have been wild and irresponsible rumours out in the community, which have been hurtful. However, we would like to acknowledge the support and assistance we have received from our true friends."
The family said they felt disappointed the investigation had been so big and taken so long.
