1. Orokawa Bay
Allow about 45 minutes to walk to this secluded beach and, along the way, admire the spectacular views of the Pacific Ocean and Waihi Beach. Beautiful pohutukawa trees and twinkly white sand, this little bay is a beaut for fishing, picnicking, bush walking and surfing. The track starts at the northern end of Waihi Beach, wending its way to Orokawa Bay.
2. Homunga Bay
After you've had your fill of Orokawa, head further north to Homunga Bay along the coastal walkway. Food, drink, and good shoes essential, as this will take about a further 90 minutes. Words like unspoilt and paradise spring to mind. Passes through private land, so please be courteous to the generous owners who allow visitors to walk through.
3. William Wright Falls
Add another hour round trip to get to the falls and back from Orokawa Bay and expect to cross the stream several times as you go. The falls are about 30 metres high and they put on a spectacular show after heavy rain, although you'll need to be nimble on your feet. And keep those eyes peeled for the nikau trees, which are amazing in this neck of the woods.
