Policeman and former Junior All Black. Died suddenly, aged 45.
Mike Deane, a leading Wellington policeman and former Junior All Black, has died suddenly.
Inspector Deane, the Wellington police district's policy development manager, had gone for a run while on holiday in the Coromandel. He collapsed and died from a heart attack, said Superintendent John Kelly, Wellington District Police Commander.
Mr Deane, a five-eighth, played 23 games for Waikato from 1976-79. In 1978, he toured Australia with the Junior All Blacks, scoring two tries.
He became a policeman in 1983, working in Rotorua, Tokoroa, Taihape and Hamilton, before moving to Wellington last year.
He is survived by wife Lynne and daughter Courteney. Mr Deane's funeral is being held in Te Awamutu.
