A youth died in one of three crashes on the Desert Rd yesterday and the police have put the blame on irresponsible driving.
One other person died on the roads yesterday, bringing the holiday road toll to 10.
The 17-year-old was killed about 12.10 pm when the car he was a passenger in rolled off the road between Waiouru and Turangi.
Senior Constable Cliff Jones said the youth was thrown from the back seat, where there was no seatbelt, and died on impact.
The driver and front-seat passenger were taken to Auckland Hospital with critical injuries.
Yesterday's other road death occurred near Ngatea when a van rolled on State Highway 2. The woman driver died and a female passenger was taken to Thames Hospital with minor injuries.
