The Counties Manukau robbery squad is investigating an aggravated assault on a man who tried to stop two men fleeing with stolen liquor in Papakura.
The two offenders, described as Maori in their 20s, went into the Wilson Rd liquor shop last Friday about 9.30 am and stole three bottles of drink.
As the two thieves ran out the door a man tried to stop them but in the struggle one of them hit him in the side of the head.
He was not seriously hurt.
One offender was wearing a cream sweatshirt, long pants and a baseball cap; the other was wearing a black shirt, dark blue jeans, white shoes and a dark blue or green fishing hat.
Detective Peter Jones said the men ran north along Wilson Rd, then through an alleyway on to Rollerson St.
It is believed the men could be from the Papakura area.
If anyone knows who these men are they can telephone either the 0800 4 ARMOS (0800 4 27667) or Detective Peter Jones on (09) 259-0678.

The attack happened at 10.30 pm on Wednesday, November 29.

"We have spoken to some witnesses but would welcome some more accounts of what happened."
Two men, one from Rotorua and the other from the North Shore, have been arrested and charged.
They appeared in the North Shore District Court last week and were remanded on bail without plea until next Monday.
Anyone with information should contact Sergeant Wallace, on (09) 489-4008.
COUNTIES MANUKAU
The owners of two small jewellery boxes seized at an address in Manurewa on Monday are proving difficult to find for the Counties Manukau Law Enforcement Team.
The boxes have distinctive floral designs.
One has a verse on the outside and an inscription written on a piece of green paper inside, reading: "To John on our 30th wedding anniversary 7-11-94. With love, Gwen."
Constable Dave Lynch said it would be nice to be able to return the boxes to their owner.
Most of the property recovered from the Manurewa house was taken in a burglary in Waikowhai Rd, Hillsborough, on Monday.
The jewellery boxes were taken in another burglary in the same area but police have received no complaint.
A 22-year-old man and an 18-year-old woman were arrested and charged with burglary and receiving.
Anyone with information can contact Constable Lynch or Constable Shane Stephens on (09) 295-0247 or (09) 295-0325
