South African Nicky Boje hit a maiden one-day international century yesterday but his effort was in vain because rain washed out the opening match of the series against New Zealand.
Boje reached 105 not in a total of 191 for two before the game was called off.
Promoted to number three, Boje delivered a memorable innings packed with genuine attacking strokes. He faced 93 balls and hit 12 fours.
South Africa lost the toss and were asked to bat on a pitch which offered left-arm pair Geoff Allott and Shayne O'Connor useful bounce.
Their early accuracy paid off in the eighth over when O'Connor had Gary Kirsten caught at mid-on by Chris Cairns for 13.
Boje and Boeta Dippenaar added 129 for the second wicket before Dippenaar attempted to sweep a delivery from medium-pacer Chris Harris and was caught at short third man by O'Connor. Dippenaar's 57 came off 104 balls.
The first interruption came at the end of the 33rd over and lasted 80 minutes. Five overs after the resumption a cloudburst ended any hopes of further play.
The second match of six is scheduled for Benoni on Sunday.
