The grandmother of a 2-year-old girl who is in a critical condition in Auckland's Starship Hospital has appeared in the Whangarei District Court, charged with assault.
The toddler was taken to Whangarei Hospital yesterday, and hospital staff alerted police. The girl was later flown to Starship Hospital.
Her 52-year-old grandmother, Patricia Billy Bissett, who was the girl's caregiver, has been remanded in custody for two weeks.
