Auckland's Sky Tower, the Otira Viaduct at Arthurs Pass and the Wellington sports stadium are three engineering feats that have brought a British expert to New Zealand.
The president of the Institution of Structural Engineers, Dr John Roberts, is on a tour of man-made feats here and in Canada and Australia.
He cited the fact that the Sky Tower was the first New Zealand project to win an institution special award as an example of the quality of engineering standards here.
NZ engineering firm Beca Carter Hollings & Ferner was involved in all three projects that Dr Roberts is viewing.
Beca chief executive Richard Aitken is also chairman of an industry joint committee that liaises with Dr Roberts. Membership of the institution, with representation in 200 countries, was regarded as a passport to work worldwide, Mr Aitken said.
Dr Roberts is consulting engineer to the £70 million ($230 million) British Airways London Eye. Its closure last Friday was due to problems involving the drive wheels, he said.
Dr Roberts also designed the world's tallest rollercoaster, The Big One at Blackpool, a 65m ride that takes thrillseekers 1.75km in just a minute.
