Critics can say what they like about movie of the moment The Perfect Storm (ours has his say over the page). But we thought we'd ask the experts too. So TV3 weatherman Augie Auer what did ya think?: "The TV weather guy sits there looking into the screen and has a comment like, 'My God, I've never seen anything like this in my life'. And I kind of mumbled under my breath, 'Yeah, and you never will', because it's a little pushed over the top.
"They show a cold front which rams into this hurricane. Hurricanes are run by the heat of the ocean and land and cold air kill them. And there's cold air being ingested into this storm and it should have phased it down and killed it.
Yes, he knows it's a true story but Augie says the storm which eventuates in the movie would take several days to happen, "and this is almost instantaneous." That's Hollywood for you.
Meanwhile, TV One weatherologist Karen Olsen says she is looking forward to the movie after reading the book: "I'm interested to see how they will portray the storm in the film."
A LONG DELIVERY FOR MILK
Those keen to see Harry Sinclair's latest movie The Price of Milk which has its New Zealand premiere at the Auckland International Film Festival on July 20 but are waiting for its commercial release should be warned: it's not likely to return to our screens until the New Year. It seems the film is going out into the world first — it's been sold to an American distributor for US release next February as well as Canada, Japan, Germany, Russia, Spain, Portugal, Switzerland and, of course, Iceland — but a local distributor hasn't yet been found.
CROWE LATEST
It seems "our" Russell Crowe may have been unfairly branded a wife-stealer with the recent revelations about his relationship with Meg Ryan. The New York Daily News says Ryan took up with Crowe, with whom she co-stars in the coming movie Proof of Life, only after she and Dennis Quaid agreed to separate, following Quaid's history of womanising. The paper also cites their differing lifestyles — she, with strong interests in literature and art; he, a golfer and football-watching addict. Meanwhile, Crowe's next film role is in a real circus, not a media one. In the Jodie Foster-directed Flora Plum, he will play a circus freak during the Depression who takes a starving young woman, played by Clare Danes, under his wing. The film starts shooting in Florida in September.
ONE ON ONE
She's got one name, she's number one and she's heading here for one public appearance. Anastacia, the permanently-sunglassed New York singer whose debut single I'm Outta Love has been in the top spot of the New Zealand charts heads here on July 18 — funnily enough the same day Robbie Williams arrives in Auckland — and will be performing at that salubrious venue, Lynmall shopping centre at 4 pm. Meanwhile for even more pop fever, the Vengaboys who play at the North Shore Events Centre tomorrow and the following night are doing the autograph signing at the Sounds store, 192 Queen, from midday on Monday.
