A full trailer has been released for the highly anticipated drama Carol, starring Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara.
Based on the novel The Price of Salt by Patricia Highsmith, Carol tells the story of a love affair between Therese (Mara), a young shopkeeper, and the older, married Carol (Blanchett).
The trailer reveals the start of the pair's romance, which is threatened when Carol's husband, played by Kyle Chandler, finds out and threatens to take their daughter away.
"Tell me you know what you're doing," a friend of Carol's played by American Horror Story's Sarah Paulson asks in the trailer. Carol replies: "I never did."
The movie, directed by Todd Haynes, premiered at this year's Cannes Film Festival back in April. Rooney Mara won the Best Actress award for her role as Therese, though the trailer places more emphasis on the titular Carol than her lover.
Both she and Blanchett are being touted for recognition in the upcoming awards season. The two have previously been successful here. Blanchett has won two Oscars for her roles in The Aviator and Blue Jasmine, while Mara received a nomination for her role as Lisbeth Salander in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.
Carol gets released in New Zealand cinemas on February 11.
