As summer creeps closer in the States, New Zealand cinemas start to enter blockbuster territory. And this year is a biggie. So here, for your viewing pleasure, are five trailers you should watch as soon as humanly possible:
The trailer for David Fincher's adaptation of Gillian Flynn's bestselling thriller is finally here and starring Ben Affleck as Nick Dunne, the man accused of the murder of his wife Amy (Rosamund Pike), after she disappears. On the outside, their marriage seems perfect, but the reality is very different. Apparently Fincher and Flynn have been working on an alternate ending for the film, but what that will be is anybody's guess.
Experts believe we only use about 10 percent of our brain's ability. But what if you could use 100 percent? Directed by Luc Besson, Lucy is basically Scarlett Johansson's very own superhero film. The actress plays a woman living in Taiwan who is forced to work as a drug mule for the mob. When the drug implanted in her body leaks into her system, she gains some insane powers including the ability to absorb knowledge instantaneously, to move objects with her mind and an inability to feel pain. Morgan Freeman also stars in the film shot in Taipei, Paris and New York.
Okay, this is a preview rather than a new trailer, but it sure does give you a taste of what's sure to be one of the biggest films of the year. The ultimate ensemble is fighting for survival across two time periods, with characters from the original X Men trilogy teaming up with their younger selves.
The first of Philip Seymour Hoffman's last couple of films, God's Pocket is a black comedy also starring Mad Men's Christina Hendricks and directed by John Slattery from the retro show. Hoffman's step-son dies in suspicious circumstances, and his hunt for the truth spirals into something quite dark and dangerous. Unfortunately, critics haven't loved it, calling the film "dull" and "unweildly".
And finally, Hoffman leads an all-star cast in this, a film film based on John Le Carré's 2008 novel. He plays a rogue German counter-terrorism expert who is trying to track down a possible militant in a jihadist group. Willem Dafoe and Robin Wright also feature.
