Abrams debuts new Star Trek film for dying fan

Star Trek Into Darkness director JJ Abrams has set up a special screening of the upcoming film for a fan who has only weeks to live.

The legendarily secretive director arranged the screening after being directed to a post on the internet message board Reddit.

It was from the wife of dying film buff, named only as Daniel, whose last wish was to see Star Trek Into Darkness.

Daniel had endured more than three years of cancer treatments and had only weeks left to live, the post said.

His family had taken him out of hospital to see The Hobbit, which was meant to be playing the first 10 minutes of Star Trek as a trailer, only to find the theatre was not showing the preview.

"We, his friends and family, the love of my life - WOULD LOVE him to be able to see the Star Trek movie but even the 10 minutes of the trailer would be AMAZING."

A new Reddit post from the woman reveals Abrams arranged a special screening of the film for the family.

They enjoyed the movie "immensely" and were honoured Abrams took the time to arrange a viewing, she said.

"It was truly amazing that a film-maker so secretive as JJ Abrams was kind enough to show this to us...

"It was a wonderful thing to see with Daniel and a wonderful thing to see Daniel enjoy - Making someone as ill as he is smile for any length of time really makes a difference. (At this point making me smile is good too)."

The woman said she was sworn to secrecy but it was poignant Abrams was concerned they wouldn't enjoy the film because it was still being worked on.

"Be assured we enjoyed it 110 per cent.

"We are so grateful thank you, thank you, thank you."
