The teaser trailer for the upcoming blockbuster Star Trek Into Darkness has been released.
The minute-long clip features an ominous voice-over from actor Benedict Cumberbatch, who speaks of taking vengeance amid scenes of destruction on what appears to be Earth.
However, the clip raises more questions than answers.
All that is known about the film is that Captain James T Kirk and the crew of the Starship Enterprise are called home to find themselves pitted against an "unstoppable force of terror".
"With a personal score to settle, Captain Kirk leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one man weapon of mass destruction."
Actor Chris Pine returns as Kirk, with Kiwi star Karl Urban as McCoy and Cumberbatch as a mystery villain.
The movie will be directed and produced by the J.J Abrams, who was also behind 2009's Star Trek reboot.
Producers Paramount are playing the first nine minutes of Star Trek Into Darkness at IMAX 3D theatres ahead of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey when it is released on December 14.
Star Trek Into Darkness is scheduled to be released on May 17 next year.
