Joseph Gordon-Levitt has been linked to the part of Batman in the upcoming superhero ensemble movie Justice League.

Warner Bros announced plans in June to unite DC Comics heroes Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman and Green Lantern in a Justice League film to rival the Marvel Comics' The Avengers.

The movie is set for release in 2015 - the same year The Avengers 2 is due to come out.

Few details are known about the Justice League film, but Gordon-Levitt, who played Robin alongside Christian Bale's Batman in The Dark Knight Rises, is rumoured to be taking on the role of the caped crusader.

Website Hitflix is also speculating that the actor could cameo in the new Superman movie Man of Steel.

Zack Snyder, who is directing Man of Steel, earlier hinted to the New York Post that Warner Bros trusts him to "keep them on course" toward a Justice League movie.

Asked whether the production company had asked him to help introduce Superman to a larger universe of heroes, he said:

"Um, how can I answer that? I can't really say anything to that, because that's a big spoiler. I will say, yeah, they trust me to keep them on course."

Gordon-Levitt appeared as young police officer John Blake in this year's The Dark Knight Rises and at the end of the film appeared to be moving into the batcave to become Batman.

He has not signed up to the Justice League movies officially and no other casting decisions have been made, The Guardian reported.

Gangster Squad writer Will Beall has been signed to pen a script for the film.
